TOSHIBA PORTEGE R400-S4831
UPON POWERING UP the R400 its already a waiting game. It takes an agonizing 56 seconds just to get to the welcome screen and an additional 20 seconds just to have it settle down.
In tablet mode, the R400 can’t be beat. It has the biggest screen on test and thus, has the widest writing space. Ports and buttons are placed and spaced very well. The LAN port, power plug, and USB slots at the back of the unit will not interfere when you’re jotting down notes. The uber-glossy screen also touts new-fangled LED backlights (as opposed to older LCDs that use fluorescent tubes).
Given the price premium, its good to know that this Tosh has some neat tricks up its sleeve. On the side it has the Toshiba Edge® OLED Display that tells you if you received email even when the PC is on standby mode. The R400 also allows for wireless docking, which, unfortunately, wasn’t present with our demo unit.
